Why do I need project management skills?

There’s no doubt that the creative industries in the UK are among the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic. But the good news is that there is money available for investment.

Take Arts Council England.  Between now and 2022, they’ll invest £1.45 billion of public money from government and an estimated £860 million from the National Lottery to support the creative industries including independent organisations, creative practitioners and freelancers. But like every funding body they need to ensure that their investment will be spent wisely.

You can go to their website and take a quiz to see if your project is ready for funding. Each of the questions is based on one of the universal principles of project management. To answer them you’ll need to know what those principles are and how they work.

Having a great idea isn’t enough on its own.  Good management is essential to any creative project, but it needs to be done quickly as well as efficiently. That’s why we’ve developed Creative PM. It’s a deliberately simple, fast-moving way of managing creative projects. It covers all the essential principles including:

  • Getting funding
  • Working with other people
  • Creating a budget and schedule
  • Tracking progress
  • Managing risk and change
  • Delivering a quality product

Our workshops are not industry specific. These are skills that you can apply to any creative enterprise: film, TV, radio, theatre, dance, music, digital, fashion and the visual arts. They’re also relevant if you’re a business or social enterprise start-up. Think of them as a foundation course in management skills.


Our online workshops enable you to learn and practise the principles and techniques you need to manage any creative project.  We use a mix of practical exercises, inspiration, case study work and discussion with other students in the group

You work through the learning materials – videos, podcasts, quizzes and practical assignments – in your own time, supported by our industry expert tutors and your fellow students in forums and chatrooms.

The focus is on providing you with simple practical techniques that you can apply to your own projects. So learning is not only practical, easy to follow and fun, but suits different learning styles and levels.

And because every project has its own narrative, we teach through the language of story.

Course Tutor

Keri is a writer and producer. Since 1992 he has worked on the BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers, in roles including senior producer, web producer and scriptwriter. As well as the on-air programme, he has produced live shows for theatres and public events, with audiences of up to 1000 people.

Both workshops can be run for between 8 and 20 participants.

Individuals can join one of our open public workshops, or organizations can book exclusive in-house events.
