Climate Change

And what project management can do to help.

Managing Creative Projects - Organised and Creative

A green industrial revolution

In June 2019, Parliament passed legislation requiring the government to reduce the UK’s net emissions of greenhouse gases by 100% relative to 1990 levels by 2050. In November 2020 the government published its Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution. In his foreword to the Ten Point Plan, the Prime Minister highlighted the potential to create and support up to 250,000 green jobs. Many of these jobs will require project management skills; not just project managers but other project roles including project support, co-ordination, risk management and quality assurance.

Project management training and education has a huge potential role in delivering this plan, and we’d like to do everything we can to support the government’s ambitions to create so many jobs.

Helping to deliver green jobs

Project management is about getting stuff done, through a set of common-sense principles and techniques. These competencies are at the heart of our own Creative PM method. But the opportunities that make up the government’s plan for a green industrial revolution are complex and challenging. They demand an innovative and, yes, creative approach.

So, which elements of project management are relevant to addressing climate change? The answer is virtually all of them, from identifying and engaging stakeholders, planning, and managing risk, quality and change. It also means understanding that every project  can have a social and environmental – as well as economic – impact.

Successful projects rely on teams of people with complimentary skills working together. This includes support staff, coordinators, technical staff and commercial suppliers. If a project is to contribute towards the government’s zero carbon target, every member of the team has a part to play.

How we do it

We design project management education programmes for employers, training providers, universities and FE colleges. Our programmes cover the most sought after project qualifications in the UK, including apprenticeships. At the start of 2021 we took the decision to incorporate the key elements of the government’s Ten Point Plan into all of our training & education programmes. We do this using real-world case studies and simulations developed with industry experts which allow students to apply the core project management skills to green ways of working.

Climate change is undoubtedly the most important environmental crisis we are facing. But real sustainability  is about more than adopting green technologies. All of our programmes are designed to instill the mindset, values and behaviours needed to deliver responsible projects.

Projects in Plain English Series

The latest book in our Projects Plain English series will be published in Summer 2021

Sustainable Project Management

Sustainable Project Management is aimed at new entrants to the project delivery profession. It assumes no previous knowledge, but the skills and techniques it covers are relevant to every industry sector including construction, IT, retail, healthcare, transport, marketing and events.

The book covers all of the learning outcomes in the APM’s Project Fundamentals and Project Manager qualifications, based on the latest edition of the APM’s Body of Knowledge.

If the world is to reduce carbon emissions to the levels needed to tackle climate change by 2030 every project will need to consider its impact on the environment. The case study in this book illustrates the opportunities and challenges in delivering a zero-carbon project, in the time of COVID-19.
